To most of those who know him from TV hits like Escape to the Country, Countryfile, and Springtime on the farm, Jules has come to personify the modern countryman. Yet there is far more to him than meets the eye.

Born to parents who’s searing experience of the second world war shaped him as much as them, he grew up in a busy B&B surrounded by a rich array of characters from around the world.

His early years gave him an insatiable curiosity for what lay beyond the horizon. Growing up in Britain’s oldest recorded town also stirred a lifelong love of history and a boyhood ambition to want to touch past.

In his own words, he’s an ‘old school journeyman’, who’s life and career on TV has led to a remarkable memoir that reveals for the first time how a boy born in a town has become an internationally recognised champion of country life.

At heart he’s a maker, an artisan, from TV shows to furniture, a family, and many long-lasting friendships. In charting the often-challenging route of a life unplanned, it ranges from the flat lands of East Anglia to the mountains of mid Wales, the military and many revealing adventures overseas. Yet underneath it all, as a boy he always knew he wanted to escape to the country.
